" LIFE AS A COCKROACH", a Kafkaien workshop

Pictures and videos which follows presents the work of BA Creative Media at DUNDALK Institute of Technology and MA Design Products, MA Fashion and MA Design for learning and teaching in Kingston University. Many thanks to all of them!

BRIEF:
Cockroaches are believed to be among the hardiest insects on the planet. Some species are capable of remaining active for a month without food and are able to survive on limited resources like the glue from the back of postage stamps. Some can go without air for 45 minutes to survive poisonous CO2 levels, which will allow them to survive climate change!
They also secrete lots of wax that contains proteins useful for the other members of the community.
NASA is even looking at them to build the next generation of spacecraft for future Mars Exploration.

In this workshop we will explore disaster scenarios, genetic evolution under extreme constraints, space travel, and domestic life.
How will thinking as a cockroach actually help us to be able to get used to weightlessness and rethink our homes before we leave for Mars and have to deal daily with Zero G.

Get ready for an upside down design workshop!

COMMENT:
This workshop was an introduction to Critical Design. I chose Kafka’s Metamorphosis as the basis for the workshop,
as the main character undergoes a metamorphosis that makes him understand how complex his environment is, and
how everything needs to be different (his bed, his room, his sofa...) after his change. It was also about helping the
students start to develop narratives and fictions around their designs.
